Die Legende vom Wegweiser (The Legend of the Signpost)

In The Legend of the Signpost, Michael Ende tells the fantastic story of a journey whose destination is supposed to be the "Gateway to the World of True Wonders": After the death of his father, the 17-year-old Hieronimus joins the magician Tutto Eniente. He becomes his assistant and, without taking care of the inherited fortune, leaves the city. The magician initiates the boy into his magic arts. Eventually Hieronimus moves on alone as Conte Athanasio D'Arcana and delights his audience with his arts. Until he finds his real mission in life: as Indicavia – as a "signpost" – to show people the way, the goal of which is the "gate to the world of true miracles" ...
