Michael Ende

In the late fifties and early sixties Michael Ende and Ingeborg Hoffmann made frequent visits to Rome. More often than not they stayed with Luise Rinser in her apartment on Aventine Hill. Both Michael and Ingeborg were fascinated by the city, and Ingeborg in particular saw their trips there as a kind of ‘homecoming’. Heartened by his new-found financial stability, Michael Ende decided to propose. On 7th August 1964, eleven years into their relationship, the wedding took place on Capitoline Hill. The marriage was witnessed by Walter Sedlmayr, an actor and friend of Ingeborg Hoffmann, and Nina Adler, a friend of Michael Ende’s from drama school in Munich.
Ingeborg Hoffmann moved into the Endes’ apartment in Ainmillerstraβe, but her relationship with Luise Ende was fraught. Eventually Luise decided to take lodgings in Elisabethstraβe with Helge-Peters Pawlinin, a renowned dancer and choreographer from Dresden.
