Edgar Ende’s Death

Edgar Ende died on 27th December 1965

In December 1965 Michael Ende visited his father in Netterndorf for Christmas and returned to Munich late on Boxing Day night. The next morning Lotte Schlegel called to tell him that his father had suffered a second heart attack and died. The funeral took place in the village of Antholing, and was attended by friends, dignitaries from Munich, neighbours and locals.
Edgar Ende had left everything to Lotte Schlegel, but his only possessions were paintings, gouaches and sketches, all of which were deemed unsaleable. Luise Ende, who had supported the family during harsh times, was left with nothing. Michael Ende contested the will, and he and his mother received their share of the inheritance.
